New Templates: Number Sentence and Dial Distribution

Ed Mobile LMS has made two new additions to its Number template offering, Number Sentence and Dial Distribution. These templates looked to fill a gap in the library of "easy to configure" number-based templates, and offer instructional designers multiple new ways to quickly and easily divide their reinforcement over a number of different slides, without subtracting any quality from their lesson.

In this article, we look at why these templates are increasingly being counted on to educate on numerical concepts in lessons.

 Number Sentence

The Number Sentence template is an innovative and easy way to stylishly ask number questions in the context of a sentence. In the template, learners are presented with (you guessed it) a sentence containing a number. They can tap on arrows to change the number with a fun, playful animation, cycling through the options configured in the authoring tool, before deciding on which number they think is the right one.

By presenting a number based question in a contextualised exercise, you can add further complexity to your number questions, allowing for advanced active reinforcement, increasing retention. This contextualisation also takes away the abstract nature of numerical concepts, allowing learners to retain information in an applicable way.

Using the Number Sentence template

Both correct and incorrect answers are fully customisable, giving you the ability to reinforce information in a way relevant to your lesson content. Let’s take a look at how to configure a Number Sentence template slide.

  1. Add the Number Sentence template to a new slide of your lesson.
  2. In the “Title” field, write the sentence you would like learners to engage with, but replace the number they must identify with a hash symbol (#) - for example, “Our product represents #% of the category sales”.
  3. In the “Numbers” section, configure all the potential answers to the slide. Remember to set an answer as correct by checking the “correct” box. Also, ensure that decimals are enabled or disabled as you require, by configuring the number of decimals in the “decimals” field.
  4. Be sure to set up a quality takeaway. The best takeaways give the correct answer, and give a bit more information about the context surrounding an activity.
  5. Try your new template live, and in real time, using the content preview window in authoring tool!

Dial Distribution

The Dial Distribution template is an easier way to ask number questions. Like Number Sentence, this template adds simplicity for instructional designers by asking them to simply type in the numbers they want included in the question - meaning you don't need to be a mathematician to reinforce number related concepts, and allowing for use cases where answers are prime numbers.

Using the Dial Distribution template

Let’s look at how to configure the “Dial - Distribution” template:

  1. Start by choosing the “Dial - Distribution” template from the Template Gallery.
  2. Add a question to direct learners, by entering one in the “Title” field.
  3. You’ll first need to specify your correct answer in the Correct Answer field, then enter some distractors using the Incorrect Answer fields. These can be deleted by pressing the bin icon to the right of each field.
  4. Configure your prefix and/or suffix as required.
  5. Select your distribution model, by using the drop-down menu. It’s best to play around with these, choosing whichever fits your needs. You can preview any changes you make in real-time, using the preview on the left.
  6. Select whether or not you would like to have extremes overlap - this means the highest and lowest numbers will show on top of each other. This is not recommended if the correct answer is one of the highest or lowest numbers.
  7. Erase any placeholder text, and insert a good takeaway - remember to tell learners the correct answer, and give a bit more context for reinforcement.
